Coke
Metallurgical Coke
Coke is produced at the Coke Oven and By-products Plant and is the solid reduce of the destructive distillation of coal blend. It is cellular, infusable and hetrogeneous in both physical and chemical properties. It is used as a fuel and reducing agent in the Blast Furnace for the manufacturing of Pig Iron. The standard specifications of Pakistan Steel coke are listed below. Excessive quantity is saleable in the market.

Uses
Widely used as a fuel by foundries in cupolas for melting iron scrap and pig iron.
In sugar mills employing the carbonising process.
For making chemicals/calcium carbide.
Used in the pharmaceutical industries.
Coke breeze is used for steam generation in boiler houses.
Used in Steel making for carbon adjustment.

Oxygen & Nitrogen
Pakistan Steel has it's own Oxygen Plant, manufactured by L'Air Liquide of France. The plant is designed and operated to a capacity to fulfill all our production needs. The plant comprises two identical air separation units in which oxygen and nitrogen are distilled from the atmosphere. The main consumer of oxygen is the Steel Making Plant where oxygen is blown into the convertors in order to convert molten iron into steel. Oxygen is also supplied to the Central Maintenance department where it used in welding and cutting processes.

The gaseous Nitrogen produced is mainly used as a shielding & purging gas at the Cold Rolling Mill in the annealing & galvanizing units. Nitrogen is also used in the hydraulic systems of the Cold Rolling and Hot Strip Mills and as an inert gas at the Coke Dry Quenching Plant. In addition both gases are also supplied in cylinders to facilitate the work where pipeline network is not available.
In addition both gases are also supplied in cylinders to facilitate the work where pipeline network is not available and liquid oxygen is also made for external sales, subject to availabilty.

Flash Point According to Pensky Martens (open cup):139°C
Coal tar is a by-product of the Coke Oven and By-product plant during the manufacture of metallurgical coke. Coke oven gas of 80 - 82°C is cooled in tubular gas coolers equipped with horizontal tubes each with a 3000 square meter cooling surface. Coke oven gas after cooling in the coolers is delivered for purification from the tar traces into electrostatic precipitators located on the suction side of the coke oven gas blowers. The coal tar is sent to tghe tar settling tanks for separation from water, then it flows to the tank for coal tar from where it is pumped to the storage tanks.

Granulated Blast Furnace Slag
